Intertextuality and the Understanding of the Qur’an from the Perspective of Reynolds

Abstract

Since the coining of the term “intertextuality” by Julia Kristeva, the concept has undergone various transformations. Some mistakenly consider it an extension of source criticism, while others, such as Gérard Genette, have sought to expand and refine its meaning. In recent years, the intertextual approach has increasingly found its way into the field of Qur’anic exegesis. Among the prominent figures in this area is Gabriel Reynolds, who has proposed the use of biblical subtexts as a means to better understand the Qur’an. This study, using a descriptive-analytical method, first explains and elaborates on the types of intertextuality and their application in Qur’anic exegesis, and then specifically examines Gabriel Reynolds’ theory regarding the intertextual relationship between the Qur’an and the Bible. The results indicate that, contrary to some assumptions, Reynolds does not seek to prove that the Qur’an borrows from sacred texts. Rather, his approach and use of the Bible for understanding the Qur’an align with implicit intertextuality as defined by Genette.
