Abstract

The present article seeks to introduce the tools for a scholarly reading of the Qur’an for Western readers. Considering the Qur’anic text as the basis for Qur’anic research, introducing and offering a critique on some of the fundamental sources of Western research on the Qur’an, and focusing on the most recent approaches and novel methodologies [employed in the field of Qur’anic studies] are all features of this article. However, the emphasis on Western sources and the lack of attention to genuine Islamic sources in Qur’anic studies indicates that it is necessary for scholarly research to make full and impartial use of all resources. This essay, which is complementary to the article on the tools introduced for the scholarly study of the Qur’an in the Encyclopaedia of the Qur'an, is important because it is the source that can be referred to by Western students and scholars who are beginning their scholarly study of the Qur’an.
