“Temporary Marriage” written by Shahla Ha’eri is and English paper in the Encyclopedia of the Qur’an, Leiden. The main discussion is on Surah al-Nisa’, verse 24 that in addition to the Infallibles’ narrations, the Shi’ah jurists and Qur’an commentators have relied on this verse to allow the temporary marriage, whilst Sunni Qur’an commentators and jurists are against them. A narration in which the second caliph ‘Umar had prohibited the temporary marriage during his reign is one of the important reasons that Sunnis are against it. Despite the divine legality of temporary marriage amongst Shi’ah, the author believes that it is still unacceptable by community.
