The genesis of the Qur’an is one of the issues that has attracted the attention of Orientalists with each one among them exerting their own energies in order to come up with what they deem to be a plausible genesis of the Qur’an. Claude Gilliot is also one of those individuals who has written a thesis on this issue by referring to what he considers “evidence” in an attempt to reject the divinity of the Qur’an. He has gone as far as to employ the phrase “the history of the production of the Qur'an.” Moreover, he depends on certain historical narratives and the presence of foreign vocabulary [in the Qur’an] as part of his evidence for claiming the human origins of the Qur’an. In the present paper, Gilliot’s views about the genesis of the Holy Qur’an are reviewed and critiqued.
