The existence of mythical stories in the Qur’an is one of the contemporary issues regarding the Qur’an that has been propounded by individuals such as Muhammad Ahmad Khalafallah (d. 1991). Khalafallah claims that that there are myths in the Qur’an that are attributed to the Qur’an but were actually from the folklore of the pagans that God did not explicitly deny. This study examines the viewpoint of Khalafallah on the existence of mythical stories in the Quran, and by considering the meaning of mythology in the culture of revelation, concludes that what is meant in the Qur’an by the term ‘legends’ (asāṭīr), which Khalafallah claims to refer to mythical stories, is not regarding myths per se as this type of literary genre was not prevalent as it is understood in the present age.
