In the Islamic culture, ḥirz refers to a variety of Qurʾānic verses and recorded prayers, invocations, and supplications that are either recited or carried upon one’s person in written form for the purpose of protecting one’s life and property from harm. The use of ḥirz as protection against the harassment of devils and jinn as well as for curing the sick is common practice within some social classes. Not all such customs are based in Islamic tradition. The significance of research in this area is that imprudent use of invocations and inattention to whether they are genuine Islamic traditions may lead to irreparable harm. Further, it is important to examine the views of orientalists regarding the Muslim prophylactic culture as well as its manifestation in Islamic texts, which represent the opinions of followers of Islam and Muslim leaders regarding supernatural forces. This paper aims to critically investigate the research and unique views of orientalists as well as to present the correct view concerning ḥirz and prophylactic measures in accordance with Islamic teachings, and the Shia culture in particular, originating in Qurʾānic verses and narrations.
