The present paper is a critical examination of Schippers’s “Psalms” entry in the Encyclopaedia of the Qurʾān. Important topics in the entry include the definition of psalms, the history of the composition of the Psalms, versions of the Psalms, similarities between the Psalms and the Qurʾān, Prophet David (a) as an author of the Psalms, David’s innovation of musical-recitative accompaniment, his family relations, the power of his voice over animals and inanimate nature, his trial, and his prayer for forgiveness.
The views of Schippers concerning the history of the Psalms as well as his comparative approach regarding the history of Prophet David (a) are noteworthy. However, his inaccuracies concerning such matters as Prophet David’s trial and claiming him to be a musician and a king demonstrate that Schippers treated the matter with bias. Therefore, Schippers was unable to investigate authentic Islamic views, which has damaged the validity of his work.
