Contemporary Algerian scholar Mohammed Arkoun’s particular views concerning the Qurʾān have influenced many researchers of the Qurʾān and have occupied the minds of Islamic and Arab thinkers. His sources, thoughts, and works are examined and criticized by numerous scholars. One of the topics he has dealt with extensively is that of the language of the Qurʾān. In his speeches and works, especially in Lectures du Coran, Arkoun associates characteristics with the Qurʾān that warrant review and critique. This paper critically examines his views concerning the Qurʾān as myth, philosophical hermeneutics, secular revelation, and his juxtaposition of aspects of the two Testaments and the Qurʾān.
