Throughout history, many orientalists have carried out research on the Qurʾān and Islam. After the Islamic Revolution of Iran, they intensified their research against Islam, the Prophet of Islam (s), and the Ahl al-Bayt (a) school of thought. Instead of demonstrating the truth, they slander Islam and criticize the life of the Prophet (s).
One of the aspects of the Prophet’s (s) life focused upon by orientalists is his polygyny, which they claim was due to prurience and excessive fondness for women, in turn, keeping people from converting to Islam and weakening the religion. However, by taking a comprehensive view toward Qurʾānic verses, narrations, hadith, and historical sources, it is clear that these claims contrast with the true character of the Prophet of Islam (s) and other historical facts. The Prophet’s (s) numerous marriages after the passing of his first wife (a) all had rational motivations. This paper aims to examine the rationales behind the Prophet’s (s) marriages, review the opinions of objective Western scholars, refute biased views, and defend the sanctity of the Prophet (s).
