No comprehensive research has been performed on the medical civilization of Muslims and orientalists though many medical books were first published by orientalists. Orientalists sought out medical manuscripts in the Muslim world ostensibly for research, but with a particular purpose in mind, after which they would publish the works. Many of the introductions or prefaces they included at the start of such works lead readers toward the intended purpose of these orientalists. Scientific motivations are merely the face of the matter with the main motives being hidden. The present paper examines the medical civilization of Muslims and orientalists based on the work of orientalists, introduces those active in this area as well as sources on the history of medicine and authorship, and investigates such authoritative medical books as Avicenna’s Qānūn (lit. Law).
