Massimo Campanini is a contemporary Islamologist who has been active in the study of Quranic verses, contemporary Muslim interpretations, Islamic philosophy, and Islamic government, and his work has translated from Italian into various Western languages and has had a great impact on Western scholarly societies. One of his most prolific works is “The Quran: the Basics”, which covers a wide range of his views on Quranic words, Quranic sciences, Islamic history and the itrerpretation of Quran.
This article only deals with his views on some of the words of the Qur'an and critiques his views in the aforementioned areas. This research has been formulated with a critical analytical approach using concise references and the latest written research in scientific research books and articles. The research method in the process of criticism, considering Campanini’s extrinsic view and the absence of Islamic beliefs, is a method of rational-historical analysis using Shiite theological, interpretive and general Quranic sciences and scientific-critical method. An analysis is made of the author's comments.
This essay, with his criticism of some Quranic words based on the above book, concludes that Campanini, in spite of ignoring other orientalists’ sources and his personal presumptions, as well as disregarding Shi'ite sources and principles of interpretation and Esoteric interpretation of the Quran, confused these two concepts, as well as misundrestanding the meaning of verse of al-Noor, the quality of the Prophet's recitation in the Cave of Hira, the meaning of the word “mutashabeh” and the example of wise people named “rasikhun’a fi’l ilm”.
