This article is a translation and critique of Harald Motzki’s article ‘Marriage and Divorce’, published in Volume III of the Leiden Encyclopedia of the Qurʾān (pp. 276-281). Harald Motzki is an Orientalist scholar of the Qurʾān who seems to be well-intentioned and unbiased in his research but sometimes, due to insufficient understanding of Islamic views and principles, his opinions contradict the teachings of Islam. Some instances of this can also be found in his article on marriage and divorce. This paper attempts to cite and explain the opinions that contradict fundamental Islamic or specifically Shīʿī principles. The most important criticisms of this article are: insufficient understanding of marriage terminology and actions related to it, the relationship between men and women in paradise, women with whom marriage is lawful, the laws of marriage to orphans, the ruling of marriage with fornicators, the ruling on adultery by one of the spouses, marriage to slave-girls, the rules of temporary marriage, types of divorce, the limit and regulation pertaining to ʿiddah of divorce, and the reason why women do not have the right to initiate divorce.
